Comprehensive Guide to Solar Power Installation for RVs: A Journey with JHC Solar

Welcome to the JHC Solar blog, where we provide insights and guidance on the best solar solutions for your RV adventures. In this post, we will walk you through a comprehensive solar power installation project led by John and Paula House, founders of JHC Solar. This project showcases our commitment to quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

Introduction to JHC Solar

Hi, I'm John House, and this is my lovely wife, Paula House. We are the founders of JHC Solar, based in Kansas City, Missouri. Our mission is to install and sell high-quality solar systems specifically designed for RVs. Today, we are excited to share our latest installation project on a Momentum 397THS RV.

Project Overview: Solar Power Installation on a Momentum 397THS RV

We are installing a state-of-the-art solar power system on this Momentum 397THS RV, featuring the following components:

  • Two Victron parallel inverters

  • Three GC3 Battle Born batteries

These components ensure reliable and efficient power for all your off-grid needs.

Step-by-Step Installation Process

1. Setting Up the Battery Board: We start by installing the board that will hold the batteries on top of the generator kit. This setup allows us to optimize space and ensure easy access for maintenance.

2. Installing the Batteries: Next, we install the three GC3 Battle Born batteries, which are heated to function efficiently in lower temperatures. These batteries are known for their longevity and reliability.

3. Installing the Inverters and Controllers: Inside the rig, we have already installed two MultiPlus II 3000s and two MPPT 250/100 controllers to handle the 2200 watts of solar power on the roof. We also use combiner boxes to efficiently combine the two inverters together.

4. Installing the Transfer Kit and Surge Protector: We installed the transfer kit and combiner box to manage the incoming and outgoing power from the inverters. Additionally, we added a Bulldog surge protector for added safety and reliability.

5. Setting Up the Solar Panels: Let's climb up and take a look at the solar panels. The Momentum 397THS is equipped with six solar panels, three on each side, providing approximately 2200 watts of solar power. These panels are adjustable, allowing us to optimize their position based on the sun's angle.

Key Insights and Tips for RV Solar Installation

Understanding Solar Capacity: One crucial aspect of solar power that people need to understand is the difference between desired solar power and available space. Our goal is to install as many solar panels as possible on your RV roof to maximize efficiency. While a 360-watt panel might only produce 200-250 watts depending on the sun's angle, having multiple panels ensures sufficient power generation.

Adjustable Solar Kits: Our solar kits come with adjustable railings and aluminum grid rails, allowing for easy transfer between different rigs. This flexibility ensures that you can continue to use your solar panels even if you switch RVs.

Longevity and Quality Assurance: Our solar panels come with a 25-year warranty, and even after this period, they remain 70-80% efficient. Similarly, Battle Born batteries are guaranteed for 10 years, with replacement options up to nine years and prorated coverage in the tenth year. We use only top-quality equipment to avoid frequent maintenance issues.

Maximizing Off-Grid Efficiency: Stop relying on noisy generators. Our solar panels not only recharge your batteries but also power your RV system. On a good day, solar panels can handle all your energy needs. Our system automatically triggers the generator to recharge batteries when they drop to 10%, ensuring continuous power.
